More About Dr. Hamp

Dr. James Hamp has a vivid memory of his first trip to Ashland. It was in December of 1978 during one of Wisconsin's historic snow storms. The temperature was 20 below zero, the winds were howling, and the streets were mounded with snow. Travel from his home in Portland, Oregon, to Ashland proved to be a challenge, but that challenge became an adventure that shaped Dr.

Hamp's decision to move to the northland. "It took my wife and I three days to get to Ashland," Hamp said. "We were stranded in a few airports but finally made it to Duluth early the morning of December 29. Coming from Portland, we weren't prepared for all of the snow and the cold temperatures, but we were captivated by the beauty and excited about maneuvering around huge snow banks. I still remember the lights of the hospital shining down on all that pristine, white snow."

Dr. Hamp also remembers the warm welcome of the medical community. At the time, Dr. Jim Shaw was searching for a partner for a busy ear, nose and throat practice. Dr. Hamp was nearing completion of his four-year residency, and he and his wife were searching for a place to establish a new home and medical practice. They had narrowed their search to the Great Lakes region and decided Ashland fit the bill.

"I couldn't believe there was a state-of-the-art hospital so far north," Dr.

Hamp said. "During the three days we visited, Dr. Shaw introduced us to the medical community, gave us a tour of his office and the hospital, and showed us around Ashland. We were convinced northern Wisconsin was a place worth setting down roots."

On October 1, 1979, Dr. Hamp joined ENT Professional Associates.

"It was a nice situation for me because Dr. Shaw had such a well-run practice,"

Dr. Hamp said. "I was able to step into a busy office setting where I did not have to worry about the business end of the practice. I could concentrate on what I had been training to do."

Dr. Hamp's early days in practice included everything from hearing problems and allergies to mouth and throat concerns to head, neck and facial surgery. Over the years he has seen a number of changes including the increasing complexity in the field of otolaryngology and fewer trauma cases.

Dr. Hamp said he enjoys patients of all age groups.

"I have had great patients over the years," he said. "I met an older woman who was a little girl on the Titanic voyage. I have 100-year-olds who come in once a year to have their ears cleaned. I see children of all ages, and that's been fun."

Dr. Hamp has embraced the Ashland community as well. He has been a member of the Waterfront Development Committee, public radio Clear Signal Campaign, Harbor Commission, Ashland Ski Trail Association, and the Ashland Planning Commission.
